In a world where kindness can sometimes feel rare, community service acts as a way for us to give back and lend a helping hand. It starts with actions like taking part in a fundraiser, helping to clean up your neighborhood, or even just donating things you don’t need—doing a form of community service gives us a chance to be active and helpful in our community.

Community service isn’t just doing those good deeds, but it’s also important to remember to always demonstrate compassion and empathy in doing them. It’s amazing how doing even a small act of kindness can brighten someone’s day and leave a strong impression. Committing our time and energy into helping others also gives us a chance to learn about ourselves while giving a positive impact on the environment around us, and bring a better sense of togetherness in the community.

Understanding this concept, GEC participated in carrying out yearly Ramadan community service last Friday (22/03/2024), which was held at an orphanage. This community service allowed GEC members to be given the opportunity to donate, give free English lessons for the children at the orphanage, and share a happy moment all together by breaking our fast together.

While waiting for the maghrib prayer call, members of GEC taught some simple English lessons to the children at the orphanage. Playing guessing games with the children there allowed them to warm up to the lesson and want to keep learning more, then after, having quizzes with prizes motivated them to engage and be active in the lesson. Filling out worksheets we provided also allowed them to practice their new knowledge on paper. This activity gave the children an opportunity to have new English knowledge and give them a fun experience, while giving GEC members experience on teaching and exercising their communication skills.

During iftar, GEC and the children there broke our fast and prayed together. This experience allowed us to share some memorable moments which hopefully will bring a better sense of togetherness, and also help the children at the orphanage.
